Well, this mac guy is going to give his input anyway I have several friends who work in computers and administer networks and they will not touch SP2 with a 10 foot pole. This being said, I have other friends who have installed it, and have had problems - but nothing that updating those pieces of software won't fix. Many Universities have blocked its download, and Microsoft has a list of programs (some of them their own lol) which do not function properly after the update is installed. Apparently it may interfere with McAfee and Symantec antivirus software as well. From what I have heard, if you already are secure with proper security on your computer (good firewall etc) then its not necessary. -- JT

Well, uh-oh....
I installed SP2 about a week ago. No problems yet. Hope not to have any. I run Norton anti-virus so I guess I need to find out what the potential problems are.
Of note, since SP2 has an emphasis on the built-in firewall, I turned off my Norton Internet Security. SP2 works well as a firewall (I think) and does block pop ups. However, it has no ad blocking capabilities. For example, I've never seen the banner ads here at JHF before turning off Norton. I may be switching back to Norton I.S. just for that reason. When ads are blocked, pages load even faster and have more space within IE.
My 2 cents.

Well all other good advice a side. I work at a place with about 1200 computers ( and a few macs ). And every XP machine has service pack 2 and we run norton anti-virus on every machine as well. We have had little to no problems, the few we have had could have been fixed by the users themselves had they just answered simple questions correctly. Our network administrator and the director of his department are the ones who made sure every machine got sp2. We have had it on campus for about 2 months with little to no trouble. It patches a few holes, has a pretty nice pop-up blocker, and good firewall just to name few benefits. But that's just my $1.50.

Here's a good solution! My University requires us to D/L the security updates that come with XP, but we were advised NOT to download the whole Service Pack 2. If you use Windows Update (the little globe icon in the taskbar) that will take you to the Microsoft Download page and will scan for updates...Instead of doing the express install option, select the custom install, and select for D/L and install ONLY the "Critical" updates from the service pack...this should sew up the security holes in XP WITHOUT interfering with some of your programs (at least in theory...don't blame me!) and it's a significantly smaller download too! Thar's my advice! Good luck!

=JHF= TEAM ~
I also installed the SP2 and I have had NO ISSUES or problems. Before I installed, I had some difficult moments with my computer, but after the install, it was free from faults.
All my games are running at OPTIMUM and smoothly. This includes all other programs.
Thanks for reading! ;D

Well, I haven't installed it, nor plan on it anytime soon and there are a few reasons why. 1: there is a bug/fix/notreallysure thing about tcp connections that kinda worries me. I havent done much research about it, but i hear it does some bad things to a few of the proggies i use, since i am a horrible college student stealing music from multi-million dollar artists (i will buy a cd if i like it, but thats another story.. ;D) and the windows firewall has taken over it sounds (another thing i havent researched entirely) 2: the university here is far from up to date on stuff like service packs and what-not, so to avoid any fiascos with them, i havent done anything yet, Of course, maintaining a stable internet connection here these days longer than an hour is something to get excited about... 3: this is just some personal experience, but ever computer i see with xp2 on it just hasnt fared well. driver problems, internet problems, software problems... i just feel that it was rushed out and not entirely ready for sending out. like it's been said, alot of people have good news about it, some not so good news, i just think its too unpredictable if your system would be honkey dorey or not to try (as i already have bad ebough luck with computers ) untill then, sp1 for me

i have sp2, and not 1 problem, i know of 2 people whose computers it seem to do bad for them, but i think they had problems b4 installing since i am a horrible college student stealing music from multi-million dollar artists (i will buy a cd if i like it, but thats another story.. ;D) and the windows firewall has taken over it sounds (another thing i havent researched entirely) btw, some versions of kazaa, k++, k-lite will not work with sp2, i have kazaa lite resurrection and it works great. i had k++ and it stopped being able to connect to a supernode. but, i dont' even use kazaa anymore, i use e-mule now ;D
